Various Types of Locks

Gary Locksmith

Here is a breakdown of the most commonly used locks used today.

  • Knob Locks – Knob locks are usually accompanied by deadbolt lock on an exterior door. A knob lock shouldn’t be placed on a door without a deadbolt lock. This type of lock will keep your door closed but it can be easily broken into. Since the cylinder is inside the knob rather than the door, it is very easy to break the lock with a pair of pliers or with force. A career burglar wouldn’t have a problem at all with breaking into a home with these types of locks. It is for this reason that our locksmiths always encourage you to have a deadbolt installed alongside your knob lock for better protection.
  • Lever Locks – We generally install this type of lock on the inside of commercial doors. They provide easy motion and are simple to use. We also install them to make properties handicap accessible.
  • Deadbolt Locks – This is probably the most popular type of lock used on doors. The deadbolt is often installed alongside another type of lock on the exterior of the door. This offers added security to any door. This is because the deadbolt is the most durable of all the different types of locks commonly used today. Deadbolt locks come in different sizes also: single, double, lockable and thumb turn. The single cylinder deadbolt is what we install in homes most often. This will also require a key cylinder on the outside and a thumb turn on the inside so that it can be opened and closed again. A double cylinder deadbolt is probably the least favorite since it requires two keys to open both sides of the door. If you’re unable to find one of the keys during an emergency situation, it can be very dangerous for all involved.
  • Padlocks – This type of lock is popular because it can be transported where you would like. These are not permanent locks because they can be moved to wherever you need them. Even if you decide to keep a padlock on a particular door, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be removed later. This type of lock comes keyed or as a combination lock. If you have a hard time keeping up with a key, the combination lock might be best suited to you. You’ll usually find padlocks on bikes, outdoor sheds and school lockers.
  • Cam Locks – These types of locks are generally found on file cabinets and mailboxes. They come in different lengths and with different cams. If you are interested in this type of lock, why not let our locksmiths know so that they can discuss your various options with you. There are cams that rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise and rotate at 180 degrees.
  • Wall Mounted Locks – This type of lock is usually only used in big buildings where keys are stored. Not just any type of keys but emergency keys. While this is what they are primarily used for, today people use them for other reasons. Some people also store valuables in them since they are small enough and they a can be installed in different spaces. They offer people more flexibility in terms of space.
  • Interchangeable Core Cylinders – This type of lock is another one that is primarily used on larger properties. This type of lock can be re-keyed by changing the lock hardware. Two types of keys will open this type of lock, control keys and operator key locks. These types of locks can be quickly upgraded when necessary. Building maintenance managers are usually the ones who benefit most from this type of lock since they are required to make the lock changes. It can also be installed with a deadbolt and should be installed by an expert locksmith. If you’re considering installing it on your own, make sure you look for the figure out on the outside of the lock that indicates it is interchangeable.
  • Furniture Locks – This is a simple lock that you can place on a desk, sliding doors or cabinets. They can easily be removed when needed. These types of locks come in two styles, push button, bolt style. A bolt style furniture lock has a flat metal piece coming from the side, which secures whatever it is attached to. The bolt style furniture lock is used in most offices on desks, drawers and cabinets.

It is very important that you know what type of locks will work best for your needs. If you buy the wrong lock, you may not receive the level of security you desire. You might think you know all that there is to know about locks until one of yours has been broken. Rather than allowing this to happen, do yourself a favor and contact one of our qualified locksmiths to discuss what you are buying locks for. They will tell you which ones will serve you best within your specific budget. You’ll never have to pay too much for a bad lock again, as long as you seek advice from the experts about your locks
